New York

A question for all the well travelled WHO community. I am looking at taking my fiancΓ© to the Big Apple for valentine's day for a long weekend 4 days to be exact. Anyway my first thoughts are. Is it to far to go for 4 days? Would it be worth the cost Β£1400 all in plus spending money and last but not least for WHO has been to New York what would you recommend. Oh one last thing the hotel is in the financial district near the 9/11 memorial is the city easily accessible from that part of town.

It's also very different to visit a place than to live there.
From 2005-07 I lived in NY whilst on temporary secondment. In mid 2007 my company wanted to make the move permanent, I said no (because I didn't like living there) and returned to the UK and left the company.
In 09 I joined a different company and moved back out to Boston, but still have lots of friends in NY so go visit approx once a month, and love to visit the place.
SD is no better, I go 3 or 4 times a year (my boss is actually based there), I normally tag on a weekend to each business trip but after that weekend I have had enough.

Like I said, it's not everybody's cup of tea, but I reckon it's somewhere you should go and see, if only once.

I went to New York for two weeks last year. Best thing I did was a sunset sail around Manhatten. Here's the link: http://www.zerve.com/SailNYC/SunsetAD
They pick you up at about 8pm, and then sail down to the Statue of Liberty. It lasts about 3 hours, and chanpagne/wine/beer is included in the price. You get to sit up on deck, and the view of Manhatten as the sun goes down and all the lights come on is just amazing. It might be booked up for Valentines day, but it's certainly worth doing on any other day they have available. Cannot recommend enough!

Moved back the the UK earlier this year. Lived in SD for 6 years prior to moving to NY. To be honest the west coast is far batter place to visit/live than the east coast. I don't understand the obsession to visit NY, Florida etc... Much nicer places in the UK and Europe...

But you still lived there for four years?
SD is great, but totally different, and he wants to go to NY.

What is the bar that overlooks the empire state building and gives you red robes in winter?
Loved that place but the name always escapes me.

After living in NYC for 4 years, my advice would be...
... go to San Diego.

HMP. McSorleys have been doing 2 for 1 at least from 1986! Hotel in financial district is fine, plenty of subway stations close. At weekend it will be very quiet and a lot of places will be shut. Great pub called White Lion just off Broadway by Battery Park Plaza. Dark and sunny but good atmosphere during week. You will have a great time and if it snows even better. They clear it from the streets quickly. If going to Macy's go to visitor center to get discount card. Used to have show your passport but think they may just require uk credit card

Norwich,
I have a great guide that someone gave to me for when I went there a couple of years ago.
I'm just out atm on my mobile, but when I get back I will whomail you and I'm happy to send the guide to you if you want for free.
I went November time and 4 days is plenty.
